Faith is the foundation we build our lives upon

Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for,
the conviction of things not seen.
-Hebrews 11:1 (NRSV)

The King James Version says, “Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.”  Faith.  It’s easy to have faith when you can see all the cards on the table, when you feel content and secure, when you feel the light of God’s love.  It’s quite another thing to have faith when it doesn’t look like there is even one card on your table that offers a way out, when you are in need or in danger, or when darkness presses in all around you.  And yet, it is exactly at those precious, precarious moments when faith is most needed, and when faith can offer the most life.

Gene Peterson in The Message puts it this way, “The fundamental fact of existence is that this trust in God, this faith, is the firm foundation under everything that makes life worth living. It’s our handle on what we can’t see.”

Faith is the foundation we build our lives upon, the gift that allows us to walk the light, even when darkness is all around us.
